Eczema, also referred to as atopic dermatitis, is a common skin condition where affected skin is dry, red and itchy. There are multiple factors that contribute to the loss of skin barrier function seen in eczema; these include genetic factors and a disposition to atopy. Other atopic conditions are asthma, hay fever and allergic rhinitis, alongside environmental factors such as irritants.
