About paediatric dermatology
Many skin conditions can occur in childhood including birthmarks of varied types, inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, low-level viral skin infections like molluscum contagiosum and warts, and a variety of different skin lesions including moles. In later childhood to teenage years, acne spots can form. Inflammatory skin conditions, most commonly eczema, cause itch and can then impair sleep at night which has a huge impact on the child as well as their family. If inflammation is uncontrolled this can affect long-term growth, so early treatment is recommended. Younger children may not be affected by the appearance of their skin condition, but as children become older, they can become more aware of this. As well as a treatment recommendation, signposting to support groups for specific conditions for parents and children is provided where possible.
